Packing down Christmas lights safely

Christmas lights

31 December, 2019 –

There’s been some spectacular Christmas lights on display this year!

With the festive season drawing to an end and plenty of people about to take down their Christmas lights, Energex and Ergon Energy are urging customers to pack and store them properly.

Taking the time to pack away and store lights correctly will help prevent them being damaged and ensure they’re safe to use again next year.

Firstly, rolling the lights up properly is important and, while there’s a few purpose-made Christmas light storage reels available on the market, wrapping them around a square piece of stiff cardboard can be just as affective.

While you’re packing away your lights check there’s no damage to bulbs, wires or plugs – if there is, throw them away or have the lights repaired by a qualified technician.

Where you store Christmas lights safely throughout the year is just as important as packing up properly. We always recommend people place rolled Christmas lights and similar powered decorations in a sturdy plastic tub with a lid, and store in a high dry place.
