A new bed-based extended treatment and rehabilitation facility for young people will be built on the Prince Charles Hospital Campus. This new facility is one of the recommendations by the Commission of Inquiry into the Barrett Adolescent Centre.
The Prince Charles Hospital is one of the world’s best – it is a world leader in research and has a long history of providing mental health services. The Commission of Inquiry identified the need for a new bed-based extended treatment and rehabilitation centre for young people living with severe and complex mental health issues. The Queensland Government and Queensland Health will be working very closely with individuals and families associated with the former Barrett Centre to help develop a new service model that will better service young people.
A suite of treatment and rehabilitation options will be available to help people move between levels of care that reflect changes in acuity, severity, and complexity of their mental illness and associated needs at any given time.
This new facility is essential, but it’s just one part of a broader plan to reform and improve services for young people.
Construction of the new facility will begin in 2017.
