14 June, 2018 –
The Palaszczuk Government has recently released the Transforming Queensland’s Recycling and Waste Industry directions paper.
Last year the Government commissioned an independent report into the transport of interstate waste which has recommended the introduction of a general waste levy and we have adopted that recommendation.
A levy will provide important investment in Queensland recycling and will create a market signal to reduce landfill.
Importantly, once the levy is introduced, it will not cost you any more to put your wheelie bin out. Councils will be provided with payments in advance to offset the full cost of the levy for households.
We know that there are more jobs in recycling than landfilling. Every 10,000 tonnes of waste disposed into landfill supports less than 3 full time jobs, while the same amount of waste being recycled supports more than 9 jobs.
Now I’m inviting you to have your say about the new strategy and the levy.
The Directions Paper is available online at https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/management/waste/strategy with public comment open until 29 June 2018.
Have your say as we develop a comprehensive Waste Strategy for Queensland.
