Department of Veterans’ Affairs community grants

Department of Veterans Affairs

28 March, 2018 –

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs currently has three grants available for bona fide national ex‑service organisations (ESOs):

Grants in Aid

The Grants in Aid (GIA) program aims to support the role of ESOs who provide coordinating and representational support within the veteran and Defence community.

The program provides grants of up to $10,000 to encourage cooperation and communication between the ex-service community, ESOs and the Australian Government.

Applications close at 2:00 pm AEST on 19 April 2018.

Building Excellence in Support and Training

The Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) program forms part of the Australian Government’s commitment to support the role of ex-service organisation (ESO) pension and welfare practitioners and advocates, who provide advice and assistance to the veteran and defence communities. It also links closely to the Advocacy Training and Development Program [https://www.dva.gov.au/consultation-and-grants/advocacy-training/advocacy-training-and-development-program] (ATDP), which provides the essential skills for claims, advocacy and welfare work.

The program assists ESOs by providing a contribution to the work of these practitioners. It does not fully fund an organisation.

The objectives of the Program are to assist ESOs to:

  • improve the quality of claims received by the DVA at the primary determining level
  • reduce the rate of appeals to the Veterans’ Review Board (VRB) and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) and/or
  • promote the provision of welfare services to the veteran and defence community.

A total of $3.8m is available for this grant opportunity for the 2018-19 financial year. The grant amount available for each organisation will be determined on the basis of the total funds available and the workload information provided in the application.

Applications close at 2:00 pm AEST on 19 April 2018.

Veteran and Community Grants

The Veteran and Community Grants (V&CG) program offers opportunities for both the veteran and broader community to participate in, and benefit from, projects that support healthy lifestyles, enhance quality of life and assist veterans and war widows/widowers to remain in their own homes as long as possible.

V&CG is a long-term rolling grant program that accepts applications continuously throughout the year. V&CG provides funding up to $50,000 for one off projects.

Grant funding can be used for a range of items, such as equipment and furnishings, building works, vehicles, bus trips, volunteer and project officer expenses, meals and administration costs. These items must be integral to the funded project.

Applications close at 2:00 pm AEST on 28 February 2019.
