Big tick for new tradie laws

tradies laws

18 December, 2019 –

Before the last election, the Palaszczuk Labor Government promised to deliver a fair go for tradies in Queensland – and we’re continuing to deliver on that.

Our Government reformed construction industry payment laws and trialled new Project Bank Accounts to ensure tradies get paid in full, on time, every time.

Deloitte have given these reforms their tick of approval – projecting that they will help to boost our economy $12.6 billion over 20 years, helping create 2,373 Queensland jobs.

We took on this reform because local tradies told us non-payment is rife in the building industry, and it’s devastating for independent tradies and small firms. Enough is enough.

Our Government is committed to ensuring small business tradies get paid in full, on time, every time. We also believe that decent builders shouldn’t have to compete with those who won’t pay their bills.

After rolling out Project Bank Accounts in 2018 we’ve successfully trialled this system for government building contracts valued between $1 million and $10 million.

An evaluation of the trial was tabled in Queensland Parliament in November and it shows the changes to the law are working and should be expanded (with some amendments) to cover everyone and make them simpler and easier for everyone to implement.

I’m proud to be part of a Government committed to the job of getting Queensland building industry back on the level.
