Coal miner’s lung disease update

15 January 2015 – Media statement – Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, The Hon Anthony Lynham –

Another case of coal miner’s pneumoconiosis has been confirmed.

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Anthony Lynham said a 51-year-old electrician who had worked in underground coal mines was the latest case.

He is not currently working in the mining industry.

A routine pre-employment medical assessment revealed abnormalities which, following further scans and tests, have been confirmed as coal worker’s pneumoconiosis by a Brisbane-based respiratory physician.

All coal mine workers are required to undergo a mandatory Coal Mine Workers Health Scheme medical assessment prior to the start of their employment and then at least once every five years.

Dr Lynham said he would continue to be open and transparent about this important health issue.
