15 May 2017 –
Entries to the 2017 Buy Smart competition are now open. This is a fantastic opportunity for students, and I would encourage schools to get involved in this year’s competition.
The Buy Smart Competition, run by the Office of Fair Trading, teaches students from grades 4 – 12 about consumer rights issues.
Young people are a big part of the marketplace. However, they can face serious risks as consumers – both right now and as they become adults. The aim of the Buy Smart Competition is to get young people thinking about important consumer law issues.
Topics that students can research include entering into contracts, like a phone contract, a gym membership, or purchasing car insurance. Other popular topics include shopping online and detecting scams on social media.
Students are asked to get creative and make a video, poster, game or anything that can teach others about consumer issues, in a fun and creative way.
The Office of Fair Trading can come to your school to talk to your students about the Buy Smart competition and about consumer and financial literacy issues.
There are over $15,000 in cash prizes, including prizes of up to $500 for the student and $2,000 for their school or organisation. Students can enter as individuals or as groups. Entries will close on Friday 15 September 2017.
